Well 2012 has started with a bang. I have spent all of this week doing architecture exteriors and interiors. Stables, houses, castles commercial and corporate. Shelter for one and all.

Also I'm off to Australia in two weeks for two weeks. Have work lined up for a bit then some beach and then some trams... whoop!

as promised in my last update here are the portraits of Aileen Gauntlett for the Financial Times Magazine, at her home in Stirling.

Along with Aileen's Pan Am story in the F.T. I was shooting promo shots for Edinburgh's Sing in the City Choir also in flight...

Having folk jump about on trampolines was a delight I intend to repeat, so stay tuned...

My work with the JRF has come to an end... The 'Better Life' campaign will go live in January next year and is a gallery site of my images and story's of a range of older folk who are categorized as 'high needs'. They seemed completely independent to me. We had a great time working together and got everything JRF needed.

Well it's been ages but there has been HEAPS going on. Still working on the Better Life campaign for JRT. Which has seen me shooting portraits in London, Wolverhampton and Chesterfield. I am off to Glasgow then back to London and Brighton at the start of next week to finish off the project.

ITV's Britain's Best Dish is under way. I got my hands on a copy of the book I shot food and portraits for. I'm delighted! It looks great. Christmas is coming so grab a copy for the household chef.

Today I have been shooting portraits for the Financial Times in Stirling. I photographed Aileen Gauntlett who held the lofty title of Pan Am Air Hostess. It was a very sought after job which carried with a good deal of responsibility. Pan Am girls were considered the best and better...

It's been a mixed bunch lately, I was back up north just days after finishing with ITV for Alitex to shoot some architecture at the breathtaking Glenbervie Garden.

And then at the Castle in Edinburgh for the departure of 'The Ride of Britain' for SSAFA.
38 cyclists took up the grueling challenge to ride 500 miles across Britain. Leading the way were Rifleman Michael Swain and Paul Jacobs who each sustained permanent injuries as they served in Afghanistan in 2009.

There has been a multitude of shoots in between the two, and in the next week I am starting a new campaign, shooting in London for 6 days, and to chill out with, some more Burlesque images for the ongoing commission at the Guilty Lily.

Well it's been mental busy this month. The Edinburgh Festival is on so lots of press coverage was required in the first week. Lots of portraits of comedians etc. I have also been traveling around the country for ITV photographing Chefs, restaurants and food for the next series of Britain's Best Dish which has been great fun; 16 Chefs, 3 Ferrys and 1,000 miles with only Gaelic radio. Back in town there was more Burlesque, more work with Make a wish, a trip on The LoveBoat... Good god! I'm looking forward to what September has to offer.

I spent Monday at Dundas Castle with Victoria Stewart for the Make A Wish Foundation. Victoria's wish was to be a Princess for the day.

There was lots of ordering prince charming about, sharing sweets, playing hide and seek with the jester and shouting 'Off with her head' at the photographer... Royals have always had a love hate relationship with paparazzi.

Late last week I was working with Sainsbury's doing some PR for their 'Switch the Fish' campaign. Sainsbury's are trying to encourage people to eat different fish to help curb over fishing of more popular species (ie cod, haddock etc.)

pouting, mackerel, rainbow trout, megrim and coley are being promoted as sustainable alternatives. "All tasted like fish to me."

Last week I was approached by waste management company Shanks to produce a collection of images to use as promotion of the work they do across the city.

It was (luckily) a lovely sunny, and very busy day.

Being a bin man is one of life's most underrated professions. It is one of the few that, if they didn't exist, a large percentage of the population would die.

Last week I was asked to Shoot some portraits of the Guilty Pleasures Burlesque performers for The Guilty Lily here in Edinburgh. We were short on time and space but the results are on target. Thanks to Tom De Lish, Daiquiri Dusk, Miss Hells Belle and Wild Card Kitty.

I am looking forward to the next wave of performers and portraits on July 29th.

Apple V's the flash

I am an Apple, Bowens, Canon photographer. However due to apples messy break up with flash there are some pieces of kit (ipad, iphone etc) that can't see my website. In the future this means I will have to stop using a flash website (I can't decide if this is apple doing what is best for their product or whats vindictively worst for flash. flex muscles here.)

In the mean time I have offered a shorter pdf version of my folio for those who prefer to browse on these bits of tech.

Pain as Fun

Last weekend I was at Strathclyde for the British Triathlon Super Series. This is a Olympic and commonwealth games qualifier race series thing and the venue itself will be the triathlon venue for the Glasgow commonwealth games in 2014.

I love shooting this type of action and I have ruined quite a lot of gear by getting too close to the action (generally getting soaked as the swim finishes, as happened again this time.)

The race was great and I think 'extra credit' has to go to elite junior women's competitor Sky Draper (15) who finished second despite being in hospital the day before after being hit by a car while training for the bike leg. Good God! ... in a similar vain I was reduced to tears after receiving a painful paper cut opening my mail too quickly. I carried on and all the mail was eventually opened.

I spent last Sunday at the National Museum of Flight in East Fortune shooting character portraits of WW1 and WWII living history folk. Everyone was super keen and we had a good laugh getting wheat was needed.

A big thanks to Bryony Hope for the Museum for all her help.

This month (March) has been super busy. I have updated the website with some of the work I have been doing and there is still more to come.

April starts with a portrait of an opera singer at Callendar House and more work for the Robertson Group (construction), and Maura Bissett (architecture).

It's been mental busy over the first two weeks of March (Feb. was pants by comparison...)

The gamut has covered dentistry, art galleries, artists and architecture. Along with a few family portraits it's been all go.

Looking forward to the next couple of weeks which are shaping up to be just as busy.

I have spent the past week locked in different artists studios across Edinburgh shooting both art work and the artists themselves. I know them all quite well so we have had a lot of fun.

I was lucky enough to visit Newcastleton a couple of days ago to shoot 'Lenamore' for Eventing magazine.

It took a great deal of effort to get there through the snow but we made it. Leix Mackinnon showed us around her families house and stables and introduced us to the Burghley winning grey who was very accommodating, if not a little cheeky.

It's such a bizarre time of year. Folk seem to get carried away with the prospect of the holiday season earlier every year.

For example I spent most of last weekend dressed as Santa and running around the woods like some sort of festive Yeti. (this years Christmas cards, I'll put them up when I'm done.)

I have also been taking slight advantage of this seasonal distraction by pushing my luck a bit. This ultimately led to getting some more interesting images published. Art directors think it's fantastic I'm having fun, every body's happy.

The website johanley.com has under gone a few changes in the past week. What was landscape has now been more appropriately named 'Travel' and i have added series of images from different countries I have worked in. Almost all of these images have been used for travel features over the past two years.

Also I have been busy building some back pages to the website. I have recently had clients who have been keen to see some of my concepts and personal work for differen reasons. So I have put a small link on the contact page of the main site so that only those who have a thorough look through will find it and be, hopefully, rewarded for their effort. (or I can just tell you about it like this and send you there directly.)

I shot quite a few portraits last week. At one stage I was again out at South Gyle (Edinburgh) for a Dutch client who are as busy as ever which is nice to hear...

I have also, just now, updated the website with some recent images. There have been massive changes in 'Travel'. I have changed things around to show series of images rather than just a selection of single images. I think it gives a better feel of the places I have worked, rather than glimpses. There are still quite a few single images that have been used by just as many publications, but sometimes more is more... So clear your cache and have a lookyloo..

Another job I did last week was a portrait of Tony Whalley. Tony is the Head of Dealing at Scottish Widows. I don't know what that means...

Never-the-less Tony was lovely and the shoot was very quick. We set up in the Scottish Widows foyer so it was a rather public event. I worked as quickly as effectively possible to limit the work place heckling.

Last week I shot portraits of Dr. Martyn Pickersgill for a Financial Times feature on narcissism.

Apparently the Diagnostic criteria for Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are as follows...
1. A grandiose sense of self-importance
2. Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

This weekend I stayed in Fort William to cover 'The Great Glen Challenge' for a feature in Triathletes world. In 40 Hours Jonathan Parrott (Royal Artillery) and Calum Morrison (Royal Marines) kayaked, ran and swam the entire 105 km length of Scotland’s Great Glen, from Inverness to Fort William.

The weather was crap, the water was cold (8°), the effort was monumental, and they did it for those who couldn't do it with them.

Well the Edinburgh Fringe Festival officially starts today.

So far 3.5 launches an exhibition opening and some mediocre comedy. Off to two more shows tonight and shooting portraits for syndication all week.

I was working this weekend for my good friends at Triathletes World covering the Durty Tri at St Mary's Loch, Scotland.

It was VERY wet and VERY dirty and as always it is disappointing to watch fit people exhaust themselves for fun.

I spent this weekend in Cardiff. My chauffeur/tour guide/pal Hannah did a wonderful job of giving the Welsh vibe. Taking us to Rhossili beach, through the Cardiff farmers market and via a little bit of work at the WOW festival's closing night. We sat in the sun, ate, drank and got more than a touch sun burnt. Hoorah Cymru! Thanks for having us.

On Friday I was covering the Rat Run for Rat Race Urban Adventure, the event that kicked off the Rat Race in Edinburgh. It was very funny, there was heaps of folk in fancy dress, plenty of others turned up in their work clothes and because it was only a 4km run no one was so knackered that they couldn't enjoy themselves.

I was in Livingston last week taking portraits of a Cab driver for Swinton insurance and Red C marketing.

It took me a while to realise that Livingston does not have a main street or even a town center... Never-the-less once I managed to cross paths with the girls from Red C and we then found our required cab driver, we had a good laugh getting the job done.

This weekend I was camping and covering the SPEA FIM World Trials Championship at Nevis Range in Fort William. Great weekend, lucky with the weather, semi lucky with the midgies and had an absolute blast watching the competition.

On the first day I needed to shoot 13 mucky boy portraits in 30 seconds as each of the competitors handed in their time cards. It wasn't easy. After 5 hours of competition they were knackered and considering there is only one winner there were 12 pissed off blokes that I had to get to stand still for me... Still we got it done.

*Cheers to woody who organised the riders as they got of their bikes and sent them my way. Couldn't have done it with out you.

And things don't look like slowing down at the moment with some great work booked in with Help the Heroes, the 2010 SPEA FIM Trail World Championships at Fort William in the Scottish Highlands and of course the Edinburgh Fringe Festival...

To collect my thoughts last weekend I took the dog to North Berwick beach by train where we sat in the sun and watched some yachting regatta.

Well I sat, she rolled in /ate anything that was either dead or disgusting.

After a busy week last week some friends and I went camping at Ardgarten which it turns out is not in middle earth but the Argyle forest... Who knew!?

I was slightly bitten and slightly burnt but none of the bugs were big enough to carry off my dog and the only animals that ate all my food were people I knew*. Camping in Scotland sure is different to camping in Australia. Luxury.

*It's wombats that ate all the food in Aust. Fat bastards.

Saturday was a beautiful 24° here in Edinburgh which is a rare thing indeed.

I spent the early afternoon with SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) siblings and families support group who had organised a memorial walk in the name of family members they have recently lost at war.

It made the previous days complaints about needing new shoes feel utterly ridiculous.

Over the past few weeks there has been a long winded debate online and in parliament over clause 43 of the new orphan works bill. "The UK Government wanted to introduce a law to allow anyone to use your photographs commercially, or in ways you might not like, without asking you first. THEY HAVE FAILED."

Congratulations to everyone that actively hounded/explained/exampled so politicians understood the repercussions of this potential disaster.

These lovely chaps are all clan chiefs (or chiefs in waiting) and are part of the series 'lullaby of an infant chief (part 1.)' The second part to the series is portraits of high school kids from less afluent areas of Edinburgh and both are linked to the Walter Scott Poem. gedit.

Last Sunday I shot a portrait of playwright and performer Jo Clifford and her daughter Katie for IPC media.

They have a beautiful roof top terrace garden that we used between rainy spells, and shared with a random fox that was wandering about.

This is a lighting test of Iain Buchanan, drummer extraordinaire. He needed to sit for a portrait for an international magazine. They wanted him air drumming so they could superimpose him behind a kit later (?) It made him feel somewhat foolish, but he was a good sport and we got the job done super fast.

Spent an afternoon at the University of Dundee shooting a cover portrait of Prof. Andrew Hopkins for Boi-IT world mag. in the U.S.

I spent yesterday in at the The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre down in Leith. The Center is "an independent non-profit organisation, set up as a registered charity over 20 years ago by a group of people with MS and their families and friends."

The center is run on donations and provides not only specialist treatment but a solid community for members with MS and their families.

By now you will have heard of Major Nidal Malak Hasan, the US Army psychiatrist who shot 13 of his colleagues dead and wounded 31 inside the army's largest base, Fort Hood in Texas, last Thursday.

Taryale Petter, John Herman, Jason Rodriques and Marcus Gonzalez are names you may not know.

Taryale was only 15 years old. Early on Friday morning, aboard his Philadelphia school bus, he pulled a handgun from his bag and shot another child.

On average guns kill or wound 276 people every day in America.
Hermann, a Minnesota cop, on Tuesday shot dead a man who ran over a plastic traffic cone in a car park.

On Friday morning, Rodriquez, 40, walked into the Florida engineering consultancy from which he had been sacked and opened fire, killing a young father and wounding five others.

Gonzalez, 29, who was jilted in love, shot dead four people on Wednesday in the North Carolina town that inspired fictitious Mayberry – the almost crime-free, one-traffic-light town, inspired by the 1960s Andy Griffith Show.

There are more, a lot more, from the past week. Such as Robert Appointee who, on Sunday, the opening day of the Maine deer-hunting season, attached a rope to his rifle and tried to haul it up to his treetop hideaway. He shot himself.

Or poor Michelle Valentine of Rhode Island who, this week, distraught over a broken love affair, held a gun to her head. When she wouldn't put it down, the police shot her.

Or New York policeman James Pileggi, who, on Thursday night, was showing his new laser-guided pistol to his best friend. It went off. His best friend died.

Now I realise that the year has not yet ended but I believe I can officially award the 'most unexpected job of the year' trophy. On Saturday I was hired to cover the ordination of the UK's first female Roman Catholic Priest! ...oh yeah, they get into trouble for that sort of thing...

I am not of any religious persuasion but I do love a radical. Well done ladies.

Gyle away the hours

I spent yesterday afternoon out at South Gyle shooting portraits for a Dutch client. We were in a very small space, but there were biscuits provided so we all remained calm and got the job done. (it's for an interactive website. lots of zooming in and out and about with staff.) I'm not sure what their final sign will say but I'd like to think...this

Well it has taken a wee while but all images for the up and coming Matthew Draper exhibition in Beaux Arts, Bath have been completed, photographed and delivered. Matt has worked his fingers to the bone for this show so if you're in town it'll be well worth a look.

The exhibition 'Nocturne' will open this Saturday 17th Oct. at Beaux Arts Bath.

Drove to Aberdeen and back on Friday to do another shoot for Drapers. I needed two portraits of Patrick Ritchie, owner of Signature and Signature 2 on Union street. It was poring with rain so we shot inside Sig2. All went well, and then me and the dog had a lovely wander around the grounds of Glamis Castle on the way home.

It's tough...

Well I survived my NHS event coverage across Friday and Saturday and I now know all there is to know about blood and phobias. (are you a left or right brain thinker? because one makes you more susceptible to phobias, trauma, and irrational justification...) for the rest of it I was sleeping...
